Nowhere to Hide by Keri Beevis Review
The story follows Callie Parker, who manages to escape from her abusive relationship with Duncan Stone—a charming celebrity who's anything but charming behind closed doors. She hides away in a secluded cottage in the Norfolk countryside, hoping to start fresh. But even out there, she can't shake the feeling that someone might be watching her.
Trigger Warnings: domestic violence, gaslighting, emotional and physical abuse, animal cruelty.
This one falls into the domestic thriller genre, with most of the action unfolding around Callie's isolated hideaway.
Domestic thrillers: a subset of psychological thrillers that happen in a “domestic” location. This can be a family home or small town but can also be a hospital, prison, etc.
I found the writing fast-paced and gripping. Keri Beevis does a fantastic job pulling you into Callie's world—you really feel her fear and desperation. The vivid descriptions make the Norfolk countryside feel both beautiful and eerie, adding to the suspense.
The story flips between the past and present and is told from multiple perspectives, including Callie and Duncan. This keeps the suspense high and helps piece together the full picture of what's going on.
There are plenty of intricate details. Just when you think Callie might be safe, something happens to ramp up the tension again. I’m not that particularly drawn to stories of domestic abuse and gaslighting but this one was well written and paced.
There's a subtle romance subplot with Nico, which adds a bit of warmth to the story without overshadowing the main plot. No explicit scenes here.
There is some swearing, but it feels natural given the situations the characters are in. The violence can be graphic, especially in the scenes depicting domestic abuse, so keep that in mind.
So, what about the ending? (No spoilers obviously)
I love my stories to wrap up nicely, with a neat little bow at the end. I like to read a cathartic scene where everything our characters have been through finally pays off physically and emotionally. Then a denouement in another chapter (or chapters) following the characters decompress where things are resolved and I’m left delighted at how well things played out at the end, every plot thread resolved.
The ending ties everything up nicely. Overall, I can’t say I enjoyed Nowhere to Hide. The premise of escaping an abusive partner is not something that I like, but it was well done and the ending was fitting. If you're looking for a thriller of this type, I think this one is worth checking out.
