Keep Her Secret by Mark Edwards – Review

During a trip, Helena has a near-death experience when she almost falls to her death. In the aftermath, she shares a deep secret with Matthew, her boyfriend. Now, back from the trip, someone shows up to blackmail Helena; they know what she did. What will Matthew do?

Trigger Warnings: Murder, drugs, infidelity, kidnapping.

This book is a domestic thrillerwith most of the action taking place in a family home.

Domestic thrillers: a subgenre of psychological thrillers set in a single location, focused on the unstable minds of characters, exploring perception, reality, and psychological tension, often leaving readers questioning what’s real. The emphasis is on internal conflict and mental unraveling rather than external action.

Edward’s writing is impeccable. It’s natural, flows perfectly, descriptive when it has to be, utilitarian, and to the point everywhere else. I enjoyed his juxtaposition between drama and dark comedy throughout.

We follow two point-of-view characters, Helena and Matthew, alternating chapters from each as the plot develops in a single timeline.

After a somewhat slow start, a single incident triggers a chain of events that has the characters scrambling to fix one problem after another. I kept asking myself, “What will they do now? Where is the story going?” as I thought ahead of the possible options they had and the repercussions each action would bring. This made for a very interesting read as it’s all character-centric action.

Helena and Matthew enter a relationship as things start going south, so there is some light romance in the beginning, along with a couple of sex scenes (nothing too detailed). I found one swear word in the whole text.

The whole read was a crescendo of thrilling suspense. I was nervous throughout, and my heart was pounding towards the end.

So, what about the ending? (No spoilers obviously)

I love my stories to wrap up nicely, with a neat little bow at the end. I like to read a cathartic scene where everything our characters have been through finally pays off physically and emotionally. Then a denouement in another chapter (or chapters) following the characters decompress where things are resolved and I’m left delighted at how well things played out at the end, every plot thread resolved.

Although I was asked to suspend my disbelief towards the latter part of the story, the ending comes to a satisfying conclusion. I just wish we had a bit more time with the characters afterwards in the epilogue, as there is no denouement.

All in all, the story was expertly crafted: The writing was perfect, and the plotting invisible, leaving the characters to shine. If you can suspend your disbelief for a popcorn thriller, then this one has all the markings of an excellent choice.
