The Arrangement by Kiersten Modglin – Review
Ainsley and Peter’s marriage is at a breaking point. Ainsley, as the fixer that she is, suggests they should start dating other people in the hopes that it will make her husband realize what he’d be missing if they were to break up. Peter agrees almost immediately. But soon enough, rules are broken and people hurt.
Trigger Warnings: Sexual scenes, infidelity, murder.
This book is a domestic thriller with most of the action happening in a family home.
Domestic thrillers: a subgenre of psychological thrillers set in a single location, focused on the unstable minds of characters, exploring perception, reality, and psychological tension, often leaving readers questioning what’s real. The emphasis is on internal conflict and mental unraveling rather than external action.
Modglin’s writing is utilitarian and to the point. There are very few descriptions and a healthy amount of dialogue and action. Except for a very few points, the dialogue flows naturally, and the action is well crafted.
We alternate between two points of view during the story, Ainsley and Peter, in a single timeline as the plot unfolds. The story starts when the arrangement is made, and soon things get interesting. The chapters are short and punchy, and the length of the novel is shorter than other thrillers. As such, this was a very fast read.
What I liked about this thriller is that even though the start didn’t read like a thriller, it reads like a drama, it was interesting, and it kept me captivated until it turned into a thriller. Then, the thrills ramp up as the story progresses.
There is romance, although it’s muddled in between infidelities, lies, and darker themes. There are also explicit sexual scenes described between the characters, but there are no graphical scenes of violence, and the language is clean.
So, what about the ending? (No spoilers obviously)
I love my stories to wrap up nicely, with a neat little bow at the end. I like to read a cathartic scene where everything our characters have been through finally pays off physically and emotionally. Then a denouement in another chapter (or chapters) following the characters decompress where things are resolved and I’m left delighted at how well things played out at the end, every plot thread resolved.
The ending ties everything together nicely. There were a few moments where I had to suspend my disbelief, but in the end, I felt the story was cleverly put together. We also get a short denouement where we get to see what happens to the characters after the main events conclude.
I had a blast reading The Arrangement. This is the type of popcorn thriller I would recommend anyone looking for something quick and easy to read. And there are sequels!
